Members of the Emporia Recreation Commission took some time Monday touring a new building at Santa Fe Park.
The outdoor maintenance facility had been sought for over five years, and Rec Commission Director Tom McEvoy says the building was needed, in large part because of increased responsibilities over the years.
McEvoy says the building is a far cry from prior maintenance buildings that had no bathrooms, running water or heat. He says the building is good for the equipment but also for staff because it provides those amenities and also offers some office space.
McEvoy says the Rec Commission is working with a landscape architect on revitalizing both Santa Fe Park and Whittier Park as well as improving the parking layout at DeBauge Family Sports Complex. Plans for large-scale renovations to the Lee Beran Recreation Center, however, have been shelved for the time being due to coronavirus. McEvoy says those renovations will be revisited after the economy recovers from COVID-19.
