Renters having trouble making payments are eligible for a new state program to offset those issues.
The Kansas Eviction Prevention Program, announced this week, gives up to $5,000 in rental assistance per household as a way to reduce evictions. Landlords and tenants apply through a joint online process. Approved applicants receive a maximum of nine months assistance with a $5,000 limit.
Tenants must have missed at least one rental payment, be legally authorized to be in the United States, have a household income at or below 85 percent of the state median income and demonstrate the COVID pandemic has had an adverse impact on employment or income to be eligible.
Roughly $35 million in CARES Act money is funding this program, which was recommended by the SPARK Taskforce and approved by the State Finance Council. Applications will be processed in the order they are received until all the money is spoken for. Interested renters need to go online to www.kshousingcorp.org for information and an application.
