The ongoing and increased presence of COVID-19 is causing an uncomfortable shift for the Emporia Senior Center.
The facility was planning to fully open to the public as soon as Nov. 9, with bingo — the facility’s largest revenue stream — set to resume Nov. 10. However, ongoing increases in COVID-19 cases and recommendations by local health officials have prompted the Senior to cancel all upcoming events — bingo and the All Veterans Tribute free breakfast Nov. 5 included — for at least the end of the calendar year.
Operations have been “dramatically decreased” since the pandemic started in March. The Senior Center has limited or suspended services and offered appointments for area residents. The center is still open to the public from 9 am to noon weekdays, even with events canceled.
