A week ago, Governor Laura Kelly said she wanted to meet with Republican legislative leaders to discuss a statewide mask mandate. That meeting is coming Tuesday afternoon.
The governor has said a statewide mask mandate is needed with the recent uptick in cases, and she has said a bipartisan effort is needed after Kelly’s mask mandate became an advisory in early July. At that time, Kansas had 14,000 cases and 200 deaths. Ninety counties decided to opt out of the mandate in early July. Kansas now has almost 79,000 cases and close to 1,000 deaths.
Kelly says she’s considering all possible avenues for a statewide mask order, and she has said the mandate is important to protecting families and the overall economy so it’s better to act as soon as possible instead of waiting for the election next week.
