Most major deadlines have passed leading up to the general election Tuesday, but workers and volunteers at the Lyon County Election Office are still busy.
County Clerk Tammy Vopat says turnout continues to increase and is closing in on 30 percent of the registered voter base. She’s not surprised by the heavy turnout.
Advance voting continues at the Courthouse until 5 pm Thursday, between 8 am and 5 pm Friday and 8 am to noon Monday. Close to 3,400 people have already voted in advance, either at the Courthouse or the Fairgrounds Anderson Building.
Meanwhile, mail ballots won’t break the record set during the primary election, where over 3,700 ballots were requested and almost 3,500 were returned — over 90 percent of the requested amount. However, almost 3,450 ballots were requested for the general election cycle and over 2,500 have already come back.
Vopat says concerns about the validity of the mail ballot process diminished over time but are still evident. However, Vopat says the county uses a variety of tracking mechanisms to eliminate any chance of voter fraud.
