With a new leader at the helm, Big Brothers Big Sisters serving Lyon County are looking at making several changes for the benefit of local youth.
Last year it was announced that the Lyon County contingent of Big Brothers Big Sisters was acquired by Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters. Since the acquisition, local children in the program have received services based out of Hays, just over three hours west of Emporia.
During a recent interview on KVOE’s morning show, Big Brothers Big Sisters Director Dena Russell Marino says one of the major focuses they have had since she took over is bringing those services back to the local community. Russell-Marino says having those services back in the local community will help children and families feel a greater sense of connection to the program.
Russell-Marino adds the program will also be looking to move away from group activities into more one-to-one mentorship in the coming months. She says the one-to-one mentorship helps to build confidence in children, reduce “risky behavior,” and help children succeed in school and move on to higher education.
