USD 253 Emporia Public Schools could be reversing course as it pertains to its education delivery model for secondary students later this week.
A special Board of Education meeting has been set for Thursday evening. The only item on the agenda will be a discussion of possibly delaying the board’s decision from last week to move secondary education students into phase three of the district’s COVID-19 education plan.
The meeting comes as Lyon County has been experiencing a significant surge in COVID-19 cases since Friday of last week. Phase three of the education model would see the on-site cohort of students needing specialized support continue to attend daily classes at both Emporia Middle School and Emporia High. The number of remaining students attending in-person classes would increase from 25 to 50 percent and with those students attending in-person classes twice a week.
Phase three was originally scheduled to begin next Monday. The special meeting will begin at 7 pm inside the Mary Herbert Education Center and will be viewable on the district’s website at USD253.org.
