As the presidential election continues to unfold, the political landscape in Kansas may look a bit different next year.
Republicans continued their supermajorities in both the House and Senate on Tuesday, possibly making it more difficult for Democratic Governor Laura Kelly to advance certain policy issues on coronavirus response, Medicaid expansion and other topics. Kelly says working with Republicans is nothing new for her.
Kelly is determining who she will choose to replace former Treasurer Jake LaTurner, who defeated Topeka Mayor Michelle de la Isla for the US House Second District seat. Kelly says she’s looking for someone who is highly qualified and someone not hoping to use the position to further a political career.
With the presidential election hinging on mail ballots and President Trump casting unfounded allegations of a fraudulent process, Kelly also reminded residents the state will count all legal ballots, including the mail ballots postmarked by Election Day and in the hands of election officials by the close of business Friday.
