When Emporia’s annual Freedom Fest takes place Saturday, there will be some unique trophies awaiting the winners.
Students in the Flint Hills Technical College welding program created the trophies by using different parts of M1 Abrams tanks. Noah East says he had the chance to create something unique and he took advantage of that.
Iris Rees felt the same way.
Adjunct professor Jacob York says this was an introduction into a process called tungsten inert gas, or TIG, welding for some students.
Even though coronavirus has changed the schedule — and led to the cancellation of both the Spur Challenge and onsite registration — there is still a lot happening at the All Veterans Memorial and Soden’s Grove on Saturday:
*The Lyon County State Bank Freedom Run/Walk or Stroll begins at 8 am. Groups of 25 will start every 15 minutes.
*The Gravel City Freedom Rides, 16 and 40 miles, begin at 9 am. As with the run/walk, groups of 25 will launch every 15 minutes.
*The Dynamic Discs Freedom Fest Open has two flights, one starting at 9 am and the other at noon.
Participants will need to wear masks until they are out on their respective routes and observe social distancing. Registration is online at www.emporiafreedomfest.org.
KVOE will broadcast from Freedom Fest on Saturday morning.
