Emporia State’s basketball teams put in some extra work for a great cause this past weekend.
Members of both men’s and women’s basketball teams participated in “Buckets for Breanna,” a 24-hour marathon free-throw-shooting event from noon Saturday to noon Sunday — helping 3-year-old Breanna McBride, who was diagnosed with cancer two months ago. ESU Associate Athletic Director and Head of Media Relations Don Weast says the players jumped at the chance to help, and there was another connection in that McBride’s father, Darren, was a student worker for Weast in the early 2000s. Weast says this demonstrates the family atmosphere ESU has fostered for years.
Over 10,000 free throws were made, and based on a penny a free throw the weekend event generated over $100. Final totals are pending.
Breanna was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia in September after concerns about bruising. Treatment may well take two years or longer.
