Veterans Day activities will be taking place across the KVOE listening area Wednesday and even through the weekend.
In addition to the Veterans Day parade and memorial service in Emporia Wednesday morning, additional services will be taking place in Olpe. A dedication ceremony will be taking place for the Olpe All-Area Veterans Memorial at 1:30 pm.
Organizer Gary Murphey joined KVOE’s Morning Show Tuesday to discuss the event. The Olpe Memorial has been in development for the past four years and Murphey says they are extremely fortunate to have completed work on the memorial by Veterans Day.
Murphey says the memorial includes the names of more than 400 veterans.
Additional activities Wednesday will include the annual Chase County All Veterans Ceremony at 1 pm at Swope Park in Cottonwood Falls. The featured speaker for that event will be Dr. Steve Iverson, a combat-wounded veteran who served six years in the Army.
Area activities will continue on Saturday with the annual Home of the Brave Celebration in Bushong. Activities will begin at 9 am and will include a World War II reenactment, church service and an auction.
There will be no food served due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Mask use and social distancing is highly encouraged at all events.
