Blustery conditions didn’t cause widespread issues across the KVOE listening area Saturday.
Wind gusts were at or above 40 mph for most of the afternoon in the immediate Emporia area. The highest gust reported was 53 mph just before 11:30 pm at the Emporia Municipal Airport. The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve area had a 46-mph gust. Eureka and the Coffey County Airport outside Burlington each had a 41-mph gust as well.
A wind gust of 48-mph was reported in Burlington as well.
Power outages were isolated in the afternoon hours. The most significant involved 74 Evergy customers just west of the Emporia State University campus between 3-4 pm. A failed fuse was the cause. Council Grove also had a small outage Saturday.
Despite a very high fire danger due to the winds and dry conditions, no fires were reported as of 9 pm.
Sunday won’t be as windy, but it will definitely be breezy with winds out of the west as high as 35 mph, especially before noon. The fire danger will again be very high for Sunday.
