The overall fire danger won’t be quite as high Thursday as it was Wednesday, but the fire danger will still be very high for Lyon County and most neighboring counties until mid- to late afternoon.
Wind advisories are already underway for Lyon, Coffey and Osage counties until 2 pm and for Greenwood County until 4 pm. Winds will be steady out of the southwest between 20 and 30 mph with gusts possibly around 50 mph, following similar conditions almost all day Wednesday. Humidity levels will be up slightly from Wednesday, but the conditions mean another day of potential grass fires and power outages.
Wind gusts Wednesday got as high as 56 mph at the Emporia Municipal Airport. That gust was the highest recorded by the National Weather Service Topeka office. By comparison, the threshhold for severe thunderstorm activity is 58 mph. Other peak gusts of note were 45 mph at Eureka and 43 mph at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.
