Emporia State University, Flint Hills Technical College and Lyon County public school districts continue to see the effects of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Emporia State’s weekly dashboard update Friday had 218 positive tests since mid-August, including 20 new positive tests from symptomatic results and 13 from group tests. There are now 70 active student cases, but with the break underway there are no students in on-campus isolation or quarantine.
When the schedule resumes Nov. 30, students will be taking classes remotely.
At Flint Hills Technical College, there are 12 people associated with the college that have active infections. Nine others have been quarantined. The college does not announce its overall total. Like ESU, the college has no classes and is closed to the public all week.
For Emporia Public Schools, several situations developed over the past week. Besides having Maynard Early Childhood Center closed through Tuesday due to staff shortages, one first-grade class at Walnut shifted to remote learning last week. The seventh-grade girls basketball team had to quarantine because of an exposure. Several bus riders were also asked to quarantine.
USD 251 North Lyon County had three new staff and six new students in quarantine, although there were no new infections.
USD 252 Southern Lyon County had nine positive staff cases between Nov. 9-13 and three positive student cases. There were 11 quarantined staff with one returning to work. Forty-six students were quarantined but none returned to school over that week.
