The medical staff at Newman Regional Health are donating money to the Greater Emporia Area Disaster Relief Fund.
Staff consisting of employed, independent and contracted family physicians and specialists have donated $2,500 as a way to give back to the community. Under normal circumstances, the staff would have a Christmas meeting to get together and elect officers. However, coronavirus prompted the change and Doctor Ryan LaSota says the relief fund was a worthy cause to support.
Emporia Community Foundation Director Becky Nurnberg says it’s a notable donation given the circumstances with COVID-19.
The relief fund developed through efforts of the Emporia Community Foundation, Emporia Main Street, United Way of the Flint Hills and KVOE in April and has led to donations approaching $200,000 for businesses and nonprofits needing immediate, urgent help to get through the coronavirus pandemic. The fund now has a little more than $22,000 available to meet those needs.
