The format was different but the food and fellowship was warm and welcoming at the Emporia Church of Christ’s annual community Thanksgiving meal Thursday.
With the ongoing pandemic, the church had to shift the annual event to a drive-thru format, however, that did not affect the turnout as the church managed to serve over 300 meals to the general public within the first 30 minutes alone. Church pastor Neil Taylor says he was proud of his congregation for adapting to the current environment to provide the general public with a delicious meal as in year’s past.
Taylor says he couldn’t bring himself to allow the event to be canceled as there are so many individuals who rely on the Church’s generosity each year.
While the pandemic did change the format and eliminate the church’s delivery option, it did not change the menu as residents received a delicious traditional Thanksgiving meal with all of the fixings including mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans and of course plenty of turkey.
The Church of Christ was not the only congregation to help feed the masses Thursday as the Emporia Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints held a similar event throughout the day. KVOE has reached out to organizers for comment on the day’s meal.
