Holiday shopping begins Friday, and things will be different — like a lot of things, due to coronavirus.
Several national retailers will have online-only Black Friday deals starting Thanksgiving evening, although the stores will be open Friday. Emporia’s Small Business Saturday will have a new aspect to it with Emporia Main Street’s first Elf Scavenger Hunt. Community Development Manager Jessica Buchholz with details:
Passports can be returned to Trox Gallery and Gifts on Saturday or to the Emporia Main Street office Monday before noon. Prize drawings will take place Monday afternoon. The list of participating businesses and a link to scavenger hunt details are online at www.emporiamainstreet.com.
Shoppers will be asked to mask up and social distance, whether they are participating in the scavenger hunt or simply shopping for holiday gifts.
Small Business Saturday has become a big event for local retailers. Nationally, nearly $20 billion in revenue was generated on Small Business Saturday, according to Investopedia. Since Small Business Saturday began in 2011, American Express — the company that started the push — says close to $110 billion has been spent at independent restaurants or retailers just on the day.
