The Emporia State womens and mens basketball teams picked up wins over Northeastern State Saturday.
The Lady Hornets out scored Northeastern 78-64 behind 26 points from Tre’Zure Jobe. She was 3 for 6 from the 3 point line and dished out 7 assists. Fredricka Sheats and Daley Handy finished with 14 points and Kali Martin scored 13 points.
The Lady Hornets trailed only once in the game. They led 36-32 at halftime and held a 54-49 lead going to the 4th quarter. They would go on a 19-4 run to build a 20 point lead and held on from there. They were 11-26 from the 3-point line.
Lady Hornet Coach Toby Wynn was happy to get the win.
The Lady Hornets are now 1-1 for the season.
The Emporia State men trailed for only 20 seconds in the game and held the lead for over 38 minutes on the way to a 76-66 win. They led 37-27 at halftime and would build at 15 point lead in the 2nd before holding on for their 3rd win of the season, all on the road.
Hornet Coach Craig Doty found a lot that still needs to improve.
Jumah’Ri Turner led the Hornets with 19 points. Austin Downing added 17 points. Brendan Van Dyke finished with 10 points and Gage McGuire scored with 11 points.
The Hornets were 10-22 from the 3 point line and won the rebounding battle 43-33. Defensively they held the Riverhawks to 36 percent shooting for the night. With the win the Hornets are now 3-0.
Both the Emporia State women and men are scheduled to play their home openers next Thursday against Newman.
