Lyon County will not be changing its recommended quarantine period despite recent guidance by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC recently stated its plans to alter the recommended quarantine period from 14 days to around 10. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has stated that while it still recommends the 14-day period it is allowing counties the option of either opting into the new period or staying with the original formula.
Public Health Emergency Preparedness Director Jennifer Millbern stated in a recent news release, “while the CDC can give recommendations, KDHE is our regulatory agency, so health departments need to follow their guidance.” Public Health Officer Renee Hively would follow up that statement saying, “as we still have a lot of community spread of COVID-19, I agree with Dr. Norman’s recommendations.”
As of now, Lyon County stands at 2,552 total cases since the pandemic began with 284 active cases as of Wednesday. The death toll stands at 50 as of Wednesday following the deaths of three new individuals over the past week.
KVOE has reached out to Hively for additional comment and perspective on the decision.
