No surprise — things have been busy for Emporia’s Salvation Army office with the holiday season in full effect.
As the Red Kettle fundraising campaign continues, the Salvation Army just had its winter clothing giveaway Tuesday and is getting ready for its Angel Tree toy distribution event Dec. 17-18 at the National Guard Armory. Major Deb Thompson says that event will be a drive-thru, contactless process.
In addition, the agency has been helping with food, rent and utilities.
About $15,000 has been generated through the Red Kettle campaign so far. The goal is $50,000. Thompson says the kettle campaign is about five percent behind past years, but she’s confident that will turn around soon. She’s expecting a boost from the Badges United effort involving Lyon County deputies, Emporia Police and Emporia Fire from 8 am to noon Saturday at Bluestem Farm and Ranch and at Walmart. The campaign also got a boost from the Real Estate Wednesday fundraiser last week, generating over $6,000 for the cause.
Bell ringers are still needed and clothing donations are also being accepted. For more information, call 342-3093.
