Washburn Rural spoiled the home openers for the Emporia High girls and boys basketball teams Tuesday night.
Rural won the girls’ game 60-44.
After a close 1st quarter Rural would go on a 20-7 run in the 2nd quarter on their way to the win.
Emporia High Coach Carolyn Dorsey said the second quarter was the big difference.
Emporia High was led in scoring by Gracie Gilpin finishing with 12 points.
Washburn Rural won the boys game 42-29. The Spartans held a 9-6 lead after the first quarter and trailed 15-14 at halftime.
Rural controlled the 2nd half outscoring the Spartans 27-15.
Emporia High Coach Beau Welch said they need to make more key plays.
Charles Snyder was the leading scorer for Emporia High finishing with 11 points.
The Emporia High girls and boys return to action Friday night at Topeka Seaman.
