A lengthy career in Congress is coming to a close.
Pat Roberts has been serving in Congress since 1980, and he officially said farewell to the Senate during a nearly 30-minute speech Thursday. He says his values haven’t changed during his time, both in the House and Senate, although he says the Senate should return to a more genteel time.
Current Senator Jerry Moran lauded Roberts’ service to the nation, both in Congress and in the Marine Corps. He says Roberts led like another Kansan: Dwight Eisenhower.
Roberts is now the longest-serving US lawmaker in Kansas history, being first elected to the US House in 1980 and serving in the House until moving to the Senate in 1996. Fellow Republican Roger Marshall is moving from the US House to the Senate after defeating Democrat Barbara Bollier last month.
