During this time of year there are those who love to give and those who love to receive or rather take what others have.
Recently KVOE News warned residents to be aware of porch pirates during the holiday season and offered some words of wisdom from local law enforcement. During an interview with KVOE Monday Emporia Police Sgt. Lisa Hayes reported they have yet to see much of a rise in porch pirate reports in recent weeks, however, that doesn’t mean residents should let their guard down.
Hayes says this applies to when you are out shopping. Hayes says in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season it can be quite easy to lose sight of one’s surroundings.
When it comes to the quick pace of the shopping season Hayes says her best piece of advice to local residents is to “pack your patience” when you head out.
Additionally, Hayes says to avoid being a victim of theft you should avoid “advertising what you have” in your home. She says it is important to lock your front doors, car doors and to not leave your blinds open if you are leaving home to deter would-be thieves from seeing what is inside and attempting to break in.
Hayes adds residents also need to be on their guard from increased scam efforts this time of year. She says the best way to prevent someone from stealing your information, is to not even begin a conversation with potential scammers.
Hayes admits that many scam efforts can be very convincing to residents and they should practice skepticism towards suspicious calls and emails. If you believe that you have been targeted by scammers, Hayes says residents can call Emporia Police for assistance by dialing 620-342-4200.
