Local residents are invited to hop in their vehicles and take a drive to Jones Park to visit Jolly Old St. Nick this weekend.
Thanks to a three-way partnership between KVOE, Emporia Main Street and the David Traylor Zoo, Santa will be at Jones Park Friday evening for a drive through meet and greet event titled Cruising with Santa. Zoo Director Lisa Keith had the details as to how the event will function on KVOE’s Newsmaker segment Monday morning.
Keith says with Santa’s yearly visit as part of the Emporia Christmas Parade being canceled this year, the zoo, Main Street and KVOE still wanted to give children and families a chance to interact with the “big guy” ahead of Christmas next week. Main Street Events Coordinator Jessica Buccholz says this one way they’re hoping to bring just a little normalcy back to the community, especially for local children.
Residents are asked to remain in their vehicles during the event to keep in line with social distancing guidelines. Children can wave and say hello to Santa from their vehicles and even get some candy canes that will be delivered through special tubes much like the ones utilized during Main Street’s Downtown Trick or Treating event in October.
