The first winter driving episode of the season didn’t have much in the way of snow to talk about, but it did lead to a fair amount of non-injury crashes around the area Tuesday night.
Emporia Public Works Director Dean Grant says crews went out around 9 pm Tuesday to treat major streets and so-called residential collector streets.
Up to a quarter of an inch of snow fell across the area, causing several non-injury crashes on Interstate 35 along Emporia’s north city limits, Americus Road and the Kansas Turnpike. There were a couple non-injury crashes on Americus Road on Wednesday morning as well.
Areawide, dry to seasonal driving conditions are noted on most highways. The Kansas Turnpike is the exception with patchy ice up and down the highway.
Refreezing is possible Wednesday evening, especially on side streets, parking lots and elevated surfaces, with afternoon temperatures set to climb above 32 degrees and overnight lows dipping to 23. Patchy freezing fog is also possible. We’ll keep you updated on KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media.
