A basket with just over 5 seconds to play by Jacob Ortega lifted the Emporia High boys basketball team to a 47-46 win over Topeka High Tuesday night.
Emporia High Coach Beau Welch was pleased with the 2nd half.
Charles Snyder scored a team-high 23 points and Chance Gilpin added 19 points in the Spartans first win of the season.
Topeka High won the girls game 61-45. Emporia High led most of the 1st half leading 24-23 at halftime. But in the 3rd quarter, Topeka High went on a 25-9 run to take control of the game.
Lady Spartan Coach Carolyn Dorsey was pleased with the 1st half.
Gracie Gilpin scored a career-high 19 points to lead Emporia High.
The Lady Spartans are now 2-2 for the season.
The Emporia High girls and boys are scheduled to close out the pre-Christmas schedule Friday at home against Great Bend.

The Hartford vs Madison games were postponed with Madison in COVID protocol.
The Hartford girls did play they traveled to Solomon to play Stafford. Stafford won the game 36-28.
