If you are looking to apply for a marriage license the process just got a lot easier Friday.
The state of Kansas is now allowing couples to complete the license application online. The reasoning for the simplification in the process is due to the COVID-19 pandemic tying up courts over the past 10 months.
Prior to the pandemic, residents wishing to receive a marriage license had to appear in person at a courthouse to swear an oath and submit information and identification to court staff. Courts managed to find a temporary workaround to the issue by utilizing encrypted emails to complete the application process.
The new online application will eliminate all but one step from that process as the marriage license will still be delivered to the applicant via an encrypted email.
In a recent news release, Kansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Marla Luckert says, “The pandemic challenged our courts to reimagine how we serve the people of Kansas and moving the marriage license application online is one example.” She says the move will make the process “faster and easier” for residents and will provide them with a “online service they expect.”
The online marriage license application was developed by the Office of Judicial Administration and NIC Kansas and was funded through a grant from the State Finance Council with SPARK Funds made available through the federal CARES Act.
Those wishing to utilize the online application need to go to KSCourts.org/Marriage. The only requirement for the application is that the applicant has a valid email address.
