This weekend, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office begins another special traffic enforcement campaign.
The “Taking Down DUI” effort goes Saturday through Jan. 3 and involves deputies seeking out impaired drivers — and not just because of alcohol. Marijuana and opioid use behind the wheel have increased “substantially,” according to the Sheriff’s Office. Combined, these substances are now involved in a quarter of all serious injury and fatality crashes.
The Kansas Department of Transportation says this is a timely effort. The New Year’s holiday period outranks most of the other holidays in the number of crashes where at least one driver is impaired.
Sheriff Jeff Cope will join KVOE’s Newsmaker segment at 7:15 am Monday with more details.
