Members of the Neosho River’s Regional Advisory Committee are planning ahead for the watershed’s water needs next year.
The committee recently had a virtual meeting to discuss several points of note, including a review of work this year and an update on the Kansas Water Plan. Committee chair Jay Byers says 2021 will be a year of transitioning from goals to action in several ways.
Committee members have discussed the expansion of cover crop use as a way to reduce sediment, both in reservoirs and in the Neosho and Cottonwood Rivers. They have also been discussing the creation of water technology farms, a three-year pilot initiative to research water issues and demonstrate new irrigation technology.
Byers says coronavirus has had some impact in getting community members together, although the RAC went to online meetings like just about everybody else.
Looking beyond 2020 when it comes to water supply, Byers says there will be a closer look into the impact of prior RAC goals and their effectiveness.
