Applications are open for individuals seeking to have a veteran in their life memorialized in Emporia.
With preparations underway for new additions to the Emporia All Veterans Memorial in the coming year, local Veteran Frank Lowery joined KVOE’s Morning Show Tuesday to discuss some of the work that will be ongoing. The updates are part of a series of park improvements coming to Emporia following approval by city commissioners earlier this month.
The improvements will include a new pathway around the memorial park with the addition of three new tablets as part of phase two of the Tablets of Honor project. Lowery says at this time the 12th tablet is now complete with tablet 13 halfway filled with names and work on the 14th tablet in progress.
Lowery says each tablet has space for 80 names with 880 names already inscribed on the current tablets at the memorial. For those seeking to have a name added to the memorial, Lowery says any and all servicemen and servicewomen from any branch of the military regardless of the era in which they served are eligible to have their names inscribed.
Those wishing to have their loved one’s name engraved on one of the tablets can find the application online at www.Allveteransday.org.
The total cost of the project is $130,000.
Additional work amongst city parks will include the installation of a new playground area at Fremont Park and upgrades to the current playground area at East Side Memorial Park.
