While the incoming winter storm system will not be technically reaching blizzard conditions current projections are still heavily discouraging travel beginning Thursday evening.
Wintry precipitation is expected to begin in the area after midnight Thursday with light snowfall giving way to more moderate snowfall between the early morning and noon hours Friday. Accumulations between 2-5 inches are expected across portions of the area with ice accumulations of two-tenths of an inch possible.
With wind gusts as high as 30 mph also forecasted, the National Weather Service is strongly discouraging travel during this time over the New Year holiday. Winter storm watches are in place for the entire listening area with Lyon, Coffey, Osage, Morris and Wabaunsee counties from 9 pm Thursday to 6 pm Friday.
Chase and Greenwood counties are in a separate watch from 9 pm Thursday to 3 pm Friday.
