A significant winter storm is now affecting the area.
Sleet has been covering the area since around 4 am with a changeover to snow expected after sunrise. TV-13 meteorologist Doug Meyers says your best bet is to stay home Friday.
Emporia, Lyon County and KDOT crews are out. If there is an accumulating snowfall, Public Works Director Dean Grant says crews won’t plow down to the street.
Winter storm warnings are up for Lyon, Chase, Coffey, Greenwood and Osage counties until 3 pm. There is a possibility of 3-6 inches of snowfall and 0.10-0.20 inches of icing.
Morris and Wabaunsee counties are now in a winter weather advisory until 3 pm. Snow accumulations could get to 5 inches.
Winds will be as high as 35 mph, making visibility difficult and increasing the risk of power outages in some areas.
