The Emporia State womens basketball team won their first game of 2021 Saturday holding on for a 62-61 win over Fort Hays State.
The game featured runs by both teams throughout the game.
Fort Hays jumped out to a 17-5 lead in the first quarter. Emporia State answered with a 12-0 run to tie the game in the 2nd quarter.
The Lady Hornets would take a 33-30 lead to the locker room at halftime.
In the 3rd quarter, Emporia State would build a 9 point lead and had a 9 point lead with 4:38 to play in the game.
Fort Hays would go on a 10-0 run to take a 61-60 lead with 1:16 to play.
An offensive rebound and stick back by Karsen Schultz gave Emporia State a 62-61 lead with 21 seconds to play. Karsen also blocked a 3 point attempt with 1.5 seconds to play.
Fort Hays did get one last look, but a shot from the free-throw line rimed out and the Lady Hornets escaped with the win.
Emporia State Coach Toby Wynn called it a good win.
Tre’Zure Jobe led all scorers with 22 points.
Kali Martin added 12 points.
Fort Hays State was led by Jaden Hobbs with 16 points.
The Lady Hornets improve to 3-1 for the season and Fort Hays is now 5-1.
The Emporia State women return to action Monday with a game at Rogers State.
