Rather than throwing out your live Christmas tree this year, the David Traylor Zoo has an alternative option for you this year.
Zoo Director Lisa Keith joined KVOE’s Morning Show Tuesday morning asking residents to drop their trees off at the Zoo rather than throwing them out. According to Keith, the trees will be used for the enrichment of animals in the zoo and will be placed into animal habitats.
Keith says prior to donating a tree residents need to make sure that all decorations have been removed.
Keith says the zoo has collected trees in the past specifically from the Flint Hills Optimists after their annual tree lot fundraiser. However; with the overwhelming success of the fundraiser this year there were few trees left to donate.
Those wishing to donate their trees will need to turn onto Soden’s Road from South Commercial and follow the gravel parking lot where they will find a dropoff point.
While speaking with KVOE, Keith offered an update on the construction at the zoo as part of the multi-million dollar Oasis Capital Campaign. She says at this time progress is slow due to the combination of the holidays and recent snowfall that has muddied up the grounds.
Despite this, Keith says things are coming along.
