The last remaining video rental chain is closing up shop.
The closure of Family Video includes the Emporia location at 1012 Commercial. In a news release posted to the Family Video website, Keith Hoogland, CEO of Highland Ventures LTD the parent company to Family Video, notes a reduce in foot traffic due to the COVID-19 pandemic as one of the key reasons for the closure.
Hoogland says, “I am extremely thankful to our employees and customers that were instrumental in Family Video’s success. Without you, we would not have been the last man standing in our industry.” That statement was a reference to Family Video lasting a decade longer then the “big 3” video rental stores Blockbuster, Movie Gallery and Hollywood Video.
At one time, Family Video employed around 10,000 workers across 800 nationwide locations. It now has around 250 stores across the country. According to the official website all stores are now holding liquidation sales and “will operate 7 days a week from 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm” until all items have been sold.
