Coronavirus altered or eliminated a lot of community events last year, and it’s already having an impact on this year’s community calendar.
The St. Patrick’s Committee has decided to cancel all events this year, including the parade and auction. Committee member Barb Lowery says the in-person events are needed to make fundraising successful and it was hard to see how virtual counterparts could work.
Last year, COVID-19 forced the committee to cancel its annual St. Patrick’s parade in downtown Emporia, although it was still able to hold its benefit auction at Bruffs Sports Bar and Grill. Fundraising still generated over $25,000 for 16 different community groups and organizations despite the virus.
