The city of Emporia is inching closer to bringing Quik Trip to the local community.
During the Emporia City Commission’s action session Wednesday afternoon, commissioners approved a CID application for Flint Hills Crossing. The development is poised to bring QT to part of the Debauge Kreuger property tract located west of the Flint Hills Technical College main campus near 18th and Graphic Arts.
Outgoing Emporia Mayor Danny Giefer says among the major impacts the new development could bring to the community is job creation.
Per the commission’s approval, a public hearing for the development is now set for Feb. 3. During that time the commission may approve both the ordinance and development agreement for the project.
Following approval of the CID, Giefer then delivered the traditional state of the city speech. Giefer says to no one’s surprise 2020 was a difficult year for Emporia from start to finish beginning with a boil water advisory that affected Lyon and Coffey Counties from Feb. 26 to Feb. 29.
Despite these hurdles, Giefer says the city also made tremendous strides as well including higher than projected tax collections, the growth of local industries such as Cargill who completed the construction of a new warehouse to expand operations and the development of 22 new single-family dwellings just to name a few.
After Giefer’s comments concluded the city then moved into its annual business meeting during which time Rob Gilligan was selected to succeed Giefer as Mayor. KVOE has reached out to Gilligan for comment on his appointment.
Becky Smith was chosen to serve as Vice-Mayor for 2021.
Commissioners adjourned their meeting to 10:45 am next Wednesday following their regular scheduled study session which is scheduled to begin at 10 am inside the Municipal Courtroom at White Auditorium.
