The fire danger is already bearing itself out after grass fires Tuesday morning.
Olpe firefighters have been busy, first with a 20-acre fire near Roads 70 and K that got into the north side of Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, about a mile west of Olpe, around 5:40 am. A small amount of grass burned but there was apparently no serious damage to any headstones.
Firefighters have also been working on a brush pile fire that got into some nearby grass on the northeast side of Olpe Jones Lake. Fire crews have been working to protect at least one house in the vicinity.
Red flag warnings are up for Chase, Greenwood and Morris counties through the afternoon. Also, Lyon, Coffey, Greenwood and Osage counties have a wind advisory now underway until 6 pm Friday. Chase and Morris counties have high wind warnings until 6 pm Friday. Wabaunsee County has a wind advisory until 7 pm Thursday, followed by a high wind warning from 7 pm Thursday to 6 pm Friday.
Osage County has issued a burn ban underway now until further notice due to the conditions.
Winds will be steady out of the northwest from 20-40 mph, with gusts anywhere from 50-60 mph. Humidity levels will be 25 percent or below and grasses are dormant, meaning they will catch fire easily and will be tough to control if fires develop.
Downed tree limbs, power outages and travel difficulties for high-profile vehicles are also expected.
