After the Capitol Visitors Center said the Statehouse was closed to the public until further notice earlier this week, Governor Laura Kelly announced short-term plans for the building Thursday.
The governor mentioned the possibility of at least one armed protest Sunday and “other potential gatherings” next week in connection to the riot at the US Capitol a week ago.
The governor says access to the Statehouse will be restricted through Jan. 22, with only people with business before the Legislature and the governor’s office allowed inside. She also said there will be increased law enforcement presence at the building.
The Statehouse was listed as closed to the public, including for tours and public events, on Monday as a safety measure with the legislative session underway and a large contingent of new members.
