After rising to finalist for an open position on the Kansas Supreme Court, Emporia native Kristen Wheeler will interview this week for an opening on the Kansas Court of Appeals.
Governor Laura Kelly’s office says Wheeler will have a 30-minute interview Wednesday morning. She is one of 16 applicants that will interview this week. The Court of Appeals Nominating Commission will wrap up the process with deliberations and voting Thursday afternoon, but there is no word on when it will announce its final three selections for Governor Kelly’s ultimate nomination.
Wheeler and the other applicants are hoping to succeed Melissa Taylor Standridge, who was appointed to the Kansas Supreme Court after a nearly 13-year stint on the Court of Appeals. Standridge replaced Carol Beier, who served 17 years as a Supreme Court justice before retiring last fall. Wheeler, the daughter of Lyon County Administrative Judge Merlin Wheeler, was one of three finalists to replace Beier.
Once announced, Kelly’s appointment will be subject to Senate confirmation.
