Hundreds of Lyon County residents made a quick stop at the Bowyer Community Building to get their first-round coronavirus vaccinations Friday.
The nearly 580 slots for Friday’s event were full in about an hour after it was announced Wednesday, and a lot of questions came in afterward — including how people without online access can get scheduled. Lyon County Emergency Management Director Jarrod Fell wasn’t surprised the slots filled so quickly.
Fell reminded residents there are a lot of Lyon County residents — over 6,000 — just in the age 65 and older category, so it will take time to get through the second phase of vaccinations.
Fell also says people need to pay attention to traditional media and social media because the process used this week, where there was a news release and an online scheduling link, will be used at least in the short term. The process is getting fine-tuned. Plans are also being discussed to have a direct phone line available for people without Internet access.
This starts the Phase 2 process for residents 65 and older to get the vaccine. It also continues the process for Phase 1-eligible residents who hadn’t received a shot yet. The process took about 20 minutes from check-in to check-out for most residents, who also had a chance to take home a free mask and small bottle of hand sanitizer.
