The atmosphere won’t be quite the same, however, the 100th annual Lyon County League basketball tournament will still tip-off on Monday.
Tournament organizer Ted Vanocker joined KVOE’s Morning Show Friday to discuss the upcoming tournament and run through some of the COVID-19 related adjustments those in attendance will see. Due to social distancing guidelines, tournament capacity will be limited to just two family members per player at least through Thursday.
With the Kansas State High School Activities Association raising the attendance number to four family members per student this week, Vanocker says they may increase attendance for the Friday and Saturday sessions.
Vanocker adds that eight sections inside White Auditorium have been designated for each of the eight participating teams to accommodate for social distancing.
Vanocker says the schedule itself will remain the same with two sessions per night — two girls’ games and two boys’ games — with sanitation and cleaning taking place in between. There will be no concessions provided during the games, so for this year spectators will be permitted to bring in bottled beverages such as water and soda as well as pre-packaged snacks or sandwiches but no coolers will be permitted.
The tournament will begin Monday and will take a short break Wednesday before continuing Thursday through Saturday. For those who are unable to attend in person, all games can be heard on Country 101.7 FM and will be viewable on KVOE.TV at KVOE.com.
