Some major, much needed, improvements are coming to the Emporia Public Library later this year.
During the Emporia City Commission’s most recent meeting Wednesday, commissioners approved a bid from Mitchell Markowitz Construction for a replacement of the library’s roof and atrium skylight for a total price just over $200,000. Library Director Robin Newell says the improvements have been needed for quite some time due to leaking issues at the library over the past several years.
Newell says she was ecstatic with the approval of the project Wednesday.
The project was supposed to get underway earlier last year, however, it had to be put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The project is slated to begin in April and conclude in June according to the current schedule.
The approval of the project comes as the Emporia Friends of the Library are getting set for their annual meeting Monday. The meeting will take place via zoom due to COVID-19 restrictions and Newell says all are welcome to attend.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5 pm. If you would like to attend the virtual meeting contact Newell by calling 340-6464 or email NewellR@Emporialibrary.org.
At this time the library is continuing to allow residents back inside the facility at a limited capacity. According to Newell, the max capacity limit is 30 people and the maximum time allowance is 30 minutes.
