The Kansas Children’s Service League is bringing a little taste of Mardi Gras to Emporia this year, literally.
The agency is selling King Cakes, a dessert traditionally served between Epiphany and Fat Tuesday typically decorated with Mardi Gras colors. Normally a small porcelain baby figure, meant to represent the baby Jesus, is placed inside the cake.
Whoever finds the figure in their cake is then traditionally responsible for buying the next cake. Rather than having the baby figure in the cake, KCSL will be placing jelly beans inside their cakes this year.
The fundraiser is being held to support the Healthy Families Program through KCSL. Healthy Families is a home visitation program that works with overburdened families that need extra support.
KCSL Director Bev Long:
Long went on to say the ongoing fundraiser is extremely important as the Healthy Families program is a free service. She says the agency counts on community support to help supply the curriculum and materials for the families they serve.
If you are interested in supporting the program, you can purchase one of two sized cakes from now until Feb. 15. Large cakes are $25 while “baby” cakes are $10.
Delivery is available with delivery dates set for Feb. 3, 6, 8, 11, 13 and 15. For more information or to order your cake contact Long by calling 620-341-2076.
