Rainfall earlier this week finally cleared most of the area from drought or near-drought conditions.
Abnormally dry conditions, which had plagued the KVOE listening area for several weeks, were largely removed in the US Drought Monitor’s latest report. Lyon County mainly south of US Highway 56, most of Chase County, all of Greenwood County and the southern half of Osage County are on that list.
Abnormally dry conditions still persist for far north Lyon County, northwest Chase County, almost all of Coffey County, the northern half of Osage County and all of Wabaunsee County.
Last week, abnormally dry conditions covered almost the entire listening area north of Madison. Coffey County was the exception because it was in moderate drought.
Most of the KVOE listening area picked up 0.60 inches to an inch of rainfall Monday. It’s the heaviest rain so far this year and the heaviest since the KVOE studios got over an inch of rain Dec. 30. That late-December rain was followed by 1-7 inches of snow areawide on New Year’s Day.
