Despite the COVID-19 pandemic local residents will still be taking a refreshing dip all to support Special Olympics athletes later this month.
The 2021 Polar Plunge is scheduled to take place Saturday, Feb. 20 at Mouse Lake and will be seeing several adjustments due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. According to organizer and KVOE Program Director Scott Hayes the Senior Center will be taken completely out of the equation this year with same-day registration and the traditional breakfast not taking place.
Additionally, the event will not have warm-up tents and spectators will be limited to accommodate for social distancing. Hayes says one other event that will still take place this year is the Polar Strut 5K.
Rather than having participants congregate at Mouse Lake, the event will have staggered times for plungers that will be assigned upon registration. Plungers will then wait in their vehicle until it is their time to plunge and return to their vehicle following.
All proceeds from the event will go to benefit Special Olympics Kansas athletes. Mitch Guthrie of Special Olympics Kansas says the Polar Plunge is always an exciting event with a very dedicated following that has continued to grow over the years.
