When it comes to the biting cold and wintry precipitation over the past several days the major focus is typically placed on driving conditions, however, local plumbers are also reminding residents to be mindful of something else.
Residents should ensure that their pipes and plumbing are ready to stand up to the bitter cold temperatures. David Dains of First Choice Plumbing says the most susceptible pipes are those that are not located beneath the frost point — 36 inches below ground level.
Dains says frozen pipes are extremely common during conditions such as those that have impacted the listening area since the weekend. Thankfully he says there are a number of ways to prevent this, and other issues, from occurring.
Dains says residents should try to get heat circulating throughout their homes as much as possible and secure any openings to crawl spaces or other areas where pipes are located to prevent wind and precipitation from reaching them. Additionally, Dains suggests utilizing heat tape which is an effective and affordable preventative measure throughout the winter season.
As residents work to protect their home lines from potentially freezing, city crews have their attention focused on municipal water lines. According to Public Works Director Dean Grant, the bitter cold can cause city water mains to constrict and, in some cases, crack causing significant breaks.
Thankfully, Grant says as most city lines are located beneath the frost line the likelihood of water lines fully freezing are very slim.
