Three buildings are getting grant funding from the Kansas State Historical Society’s Heritage Trust Fund grant program.
The Strong City Opera House and the Star Block in Osage City are both getting $90,000, the maximum amount available through the program. Eureka’s Memorial Hall, meanwhile, is getting over $87,000.
The Strong City Opera House has been involved in a renovation process since 2017. Initial construction on what was first called the 1900 Auditorium began in 1900. The building was initially an opera house before getting converted to a theater in the 1920s.
Eureka’s Memorial Hall was built in 1924 and now serves as City Hall for the Greenwood County seat.
The Osage City Star Block was built in 1883 during a coal boom. It is currently being renovated and was named to the Kansas Register of Historic Places in November.
The Heritage Trust Fund program offers grant funding for projects to “preserve or restore” historic locations. Properties owned by private citizens, local governments, non-profit and for-profit entities are eligible for grant funds.
