After 32 rounds of spelling and nearly two full hours of competition, Jordan Crouch of Olpe was crowned the 2021 Lyon County Spelling Bee Champion by spelling the winning word “affiliation.”
Crouch and fellow Olpe student Garret Hammond went back and forth for more than 30 minutes of spelling to crown the winner. Crouch says he thought he would do well, but he didn’t think he’d win.
The spelling bee featured 27 spellers from grades 3-8 across Lyon County. Crouch will now represent the county in the Kansas Press Association State Spelling Bee. Hammond is this year’s first alternate.
Noah Coltrane of Emporia Christian School and Kylen Johnson of ECS are the second and third alternates.
