Planning to get a space heater? Already using one? Emporia Fire has several things for you to consider as the temperatures plummet the next few nights.
Battalion Chief Ryan Conley says space heaters are popular this time of year and may well be more in use now with overnight lows in the zero to -15 range between Saturday night and Monday night. Conley says there isn’t a long list of issues with space heaters, but things can go very wrong if they aren’t used the right way.
Conley says people need to turn space heaters off if they leave a given room or plan to go to sleep. They should also never be considered as the main heating source for a room.
Looking at alternate heating sources as a whole, Conley says the same safety tips apply. Be sure to watch alternate heating sources and supervise children who may be nearby.
